The most surprising thing about drywall repair pricing is that a tiny hole often costs about the same as several tiny holes. Understanding why explains almost everything about how repairs are priced — and how to spend less on them.

Repairs are priced by the visit, not the square foot

New drywall installation is quoted per square foot because it is predictable, high-volume work. Repairs are the opposite: small, scattered, and dominated by setup time. A contractor coming to fix one doorknob hole has to drive to your house, protect the area, mix compound, apply it, wait for it to dry, return to sand and prime, and clean up. The hole itself is minutes of that.

That is why most contractors have a minimum service charge covering the first hour or two on site. One small repair hits that minimum. So does having six small repairs done at once. The material cost difference between one hole and six is negligible.

The single best way to save money on repairs

Batch them. Walk your house and make a list — the hallway ding, the two nail pops in the bedroom, the crack over the closet door, the anchor holes from the shelf you moved. Have all of it done in one visit. You pay one minimum instead of several, and the per-repair cost drops dramatically.

What makes one repair cost more than another

• Texture matching. A smooth wall is easy. Matching an existing knockdown, orange peel, or older hand-applied texture takes skill and time, and it is the step that makes a repair invisible rather than obvious.
• Ceiling vs. wall. Overhead work is slower and harder to hide, so ceiling repairs cost more than the same repair on a wall.
• Size and backing. Anything bigger than a few inches needs backing behind it so the patch has something solid to fasten to. That is more involved than filling a nail hole.
• Finding the cause. A crack that keeps returning is a movement or moisture problem. Fixing the underlying cause costs more than a cosmetic patch but is the only thing that actually lasts.

When repair is not the right answer

If drywall has been saturated with water, patching it is a waste of money — saturated gypsum loses strength permanently and needs replacing. The same is true when damage is widespread rather than localized. A good contractor will tell you honestly which situation you are in.
